What we'll do
Let's take a beautiful winter hike on the grassy balds in the Roan Highlands, along the NC/TN border in northwestern NC!

This event is for adult women only. Sorry, NO DOGS ON THIS HIKE. It is very icy in some spots and leashed dogs could pull people down.

We will meet at 10:00 am next to the large Carver's Gap sign at the juncture of state highways NC 261 and TN 143 near the NC-TN state line in northwestern NC. This location is about 1.5 hours north of Asheville. You can find the location by typing "Carver's Gap" into Google Maps. I suggest printing out directions from Google Maps. Don't rely exclusively on GPS to find this place -- you may not be able to get a signal in the mountains. The vault toilets at the parking lot are CLOSED for the winter, so be prepared to use nature as your bathroom. The parking area may be crowded, and you may have to park along the road some distance away. Allow plenty of travel time, parking time, potty time, wardrobe adjustment time, etc. to arrive at the sign by 10:00 am ready to hike. We can try to arrange carpooling from Asheville at it gets closer to the event.

From Carver's Gap, we'll travel on the historic Appalachian Trail to hike to the summits of three grassy balds -- Round Bald, Jane Bald and Grassy Ridge -- and then back: about 5 miles round trip. This is one of the most scenic stretches of the entire Appalachian Trail. Expect moderate to strenuous hiking, as there will be some significant elevation gain and loss, and some rocky stretches of trail. Please keep in mind that this a high-elevation winter hike and icy conditions on the trail are possible.
We will hike at a ~2mph rate and the hike should take about 3 hours. We will stop for lunch at Grassy Ridge before we head back to Carver's Gap. There will also be stops for photos and snacks/water along the way. Hiking boots are suggested, as are water, snacks, bagged lunch, hiking poles or hiking stick, a hat and sunscreen. PLEASE DRESS IN LAYERS as the temperatures in the Roan can be up to 15 degrees colder than Asheville. I will keep an eye on the weather and will have updates as we get closer to the hike.
