When We White Helping Professionals Work with People of Color: Mixing Good Intentions, Good Practices and White Privilege.

Dates added: Thursday, 1/11/18 1230-430pm (four sports remaining) / Saturday, 2/10/18 830am-1230 (just added!)

Daily in the White House...right here in the Twin Cities with the killings by police...All around us all, every day.

With the increase of fear, anger, and hopelessness and Oppression Fatigue that so many minorities of all types are experiencing, many white socially conscious and caring helping professionals are wondering how to best support their clients who are People of Color. Additionally, we white people have our own concerns and reactions to what these times are like for us, personally and professionally.

In this workshop we will overtly address the race dynamics for us non-People of Color when we are the helping professional working with a Person of Color. So much of this stuff we white people dont talk about or we dont know how to talk about it or we are afraid to talk about it because we dont want to show our racism or to "appear racist".

This workshop is grounded in the premises that racism exists, that all white people gain privilege from the systems of white supremacy, and that white people have an obligation and responsibility to understand and own our racism and privilege and, then, to actively work for racial justice. It is especially helpful if participants already have some understanding of their own privilege or are open to learning more about it. People who can join in these premises are welcome to attend.

This workshop is an opportunity for white socially conscious mental health, medical, education, and social service providers, and other related helpers, to join together to create asupportive, informative, non-judgmental,confidential and frank space to:

-Talk openly about race and our whiteness

-Identify common race dynamic questions, worries, and issues that we may have, situations we have come across, and the mistakes that we white helpers often make when helping People of Color

-Discuss our white privilege, our overt and covert racism, and common approaches, stereotypes and judgments that white well-intentioned people/professionals often have when working with People of Color

-We will discuss the topics of White Liberalism, White Fragility, Cultural Appropriation, White Savior Complex and how these concepts influence our work as helping professionals.

-We will also review information from People of Color about their experiences with well intentioned white people and white helping professionals and what they would want / need from us instead.
