Join Randy and Meetup friends for a hike/bike/brunch picnic adventure along a lovely tree shaded, scenic bike trail that follows a catch and release trout stream, the 'West Fork" of the San Gabriel River to Cogswell's Reservoir and return.

SUMMARY:Round trip distance: 13 miles (bike) 2 miles (hike)
Elevation gain/loss: 500' (bike) 500' (hike)
Round trip biking time: 90 minutes
Round trip hiking time: 60 minutes
Picnic time: 60 minutes

MEETING LOCATION: We meet next to rest rooms in the parking lot located just north of the Highway 39/San Gabriel Canyon Road bridge over the West Fork of the San Gabriel River. Allow at least two hours of driving time from Orange County and plan to be at the trail head early with bike and picnic provision ready to ride in advance of our 9 AM Meetup time.

ABOUT THE TRIP: We depart the parking area crossing the river bridge following the paved single lane road (closed to public vehicle traffic and used as a government agency service road). The road has a gentle upslope and enjoys beautiful canyon and river views. It is mostly shaded by spruce, alder, oak and sycamore trees. We will stop at a distance of 6.5 miles at the Glenn Trail Camp that has both picnic and rest room facilities. Locking the bikes near the camp, we will continue on the service road with a one mile, steep hike to enjoy beautiful mountain vistas over the Cogswell Dam and Reservoir water shed. We return to Glenn Camp for our picnic pot luck with Brunch items to share.... followed by an 'E Ticket" downhill bike ride to the parking area. The "West Fork" is a controlled flow, year round, catch and release trout stream that is a Southern California treasure.

ABOUT THE PICNIC: It's a potluck picnic lunch, so please bring food to share. BYOB (beverage). Our picnic location is at the mid-point of the bike ride, so F & B items will need to be packed for the ride.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS: From the 210 Freeway in the City of Azusa, take the Highway 39/Azusa Avenue exit heading north. This becomes San Gabriel Canyon Road and enters the Angeles National Forest. Continue past the San Gabriel and Morris Reservoirs and a large off road vehicle area to where the highway crosses the West Fork. This is approximately 13 miles north of the 210 Freeway and 1 mile north of the Rincon Ranger Station. There are parking areas just before and beyond the bridge. We will meet next to the rest rooms in the parking lot located just north of the bridge. The West Fork National Bikeway Trailhead starts on the south side of the bridge and heads up the West Fork. You will need to purchase a day use Adventure Pass to park at the West Fork trailhead.
