Where we'll meet:
For the first walk, we'll meet at the second parking lot past the north entrance to the park. This is NOT the main entrance (which is about 5 miles south of the intersection of highway 83 and 86). Instead, go west about a quarter mile on 86 in Franktown, and turn left. Continue for about 3 miles. The parking lot is the second one you'll encounter once in the park. Go past the first smaller lot, continue on the dirt road for about a half mile, and pull into the much larger parking lot on the left.
While Castlewood Canyon is not the most technical terrain, it does have some challenging uphills and some rocky and sometimes muddy or icy sections. Make sure you are prepared with appropriate footwear. The pace will be casual, and we'll be encouraging a quiet, slow, unobtrusive attitude as we make our way through the canyon. Large, loud and fast groups don't see much wildlife, typically.
What to bring:
- Everything you would bring on a day hike in the front range: layers, rain jacket, hiking shoes/boots, etc.
- Water and snacks
- Binoculars (not required but recommended)
- Camera (not required)
- Field guides - birds, plants, trees, mushrooms, any guides that may come in handy
