Have you ever wondered what REALLY happens when a gamma-ray hits Earth's atmosphere? Curious if the Incredible Hulk is a possible outcome? Get up close and personal with the VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Array System) right here in Southern Arizona to find out the answers to all of your pressing questions about these "invisible" rays coming to Earth from outer space.

On this *NEW* "up close and personal" walking tour at the base of Mt. Hopkins, led by scientists and volunteers from VERITAS and the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory you will:

  • Stand in the shadow of T1 (and potentially climb the staircase*)
  • Get special photo ops designed for your once-in-a-lifetime experience
  • Go into the Staff Only "yard" to view and learn about the prototype Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (pSCT), a new kind of gamma-ray telescope being tested and perfected right here at FLWO for potential use in the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array

This experience is NOT provided as a part of regular bus tours and is a new and unique experience for guests of FLWO. This tour is provided on a limited-time basis. Don't miss out!

Cost: Free, but a $5 cash donation is encouraged and appreciated.
Number of guests: For the safety of our guests, this walking tour is limited to 15 people per tour.
Registration: Registration is required for all members of your party.
Requirements: All guests must sign a waiver provided at the time of arrival. All guests must be able to walk unaided outside over uneven terrain for approximately 600 yards. This tour goes into restricted areas that are not common public access, and may not be ADA-accessible.
