One of Jekyll Island’s great traditions returns for 2018 – Turtle Crawl. This series of races – triathlons, 5K, and 10K – benefit the renowned Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and unofficially kick-off the start of sea turtle nesting season. This unique event on Georgia’s coast celebrates athleticism and ecology, and is the perfect place for a fun, family “racecation.”

Known as one of the most-scenic triathlons on the East Coast, the Turtle Crawl Triathlon is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Jekyll Island’s magnificent Great Dunes Park is the start-finish area for the three Turtle Crawl races, that together, accommodate every skill level, from elite, world-class athletes to novices. The weekend’s schedule includes an International Distance Triathlon and a Sprint Distance Triathlon on Saturday, and a traditional 10K / 5K run on Sunday.

These heart-healthy races along Jekyll Island’s picturesque shoreline and maritime forest do more than get your blood pumping; they also aid sea turtle education, research, and rehabilitation at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) through the Jekyll Island Foundation.

Turtle Crawl Sprint Triathlon:

  • 600m swim (point to point in the ocean)
  • 14.5 mile bike (one loop of the island),
  • 5k run (out and back)

Turtle Crawl International-Distance Triathlon:

  • 1500m swim (point to point in the ocean)
  • 29 mile bike (two loops of the island),
  • 10k run (out and back)

Turtle Crawl 5k and 10k runs:

  • Both start near the Jekyll Island Convention Center and run along Beachview Drive
  • At the half-way point of each race, runners will turn and finish along either the bike path or "beachwalk" before finishing at Great Dunes Park.
