Are you ready to provide a more welcoming therapeutic experience by expanding your understanding of gender? This interactive workshop will provide practitioners with a solid introduction to what it means to be transgender or gender diverse. Participants are invited to come ready with questions on any aspect of transgender issues.

This class is for health care practitioners that have training and experience providing basic breast massage and will be limited to 8 students. This is NOT an introductory breast massage course. Techniques can be applied to all genders and the class is open to students of all genders.

The first morning, there will be a mix of lecture and discussion on gender identity in general:

1) What is gender identity and how does it differ from sexuality?

2) Transition at different ages and pre/post puberty

3) The gender spectrum & different types of transition

4) Which terminology is preferred, and which is offensive?

The afternoon will focus on
1) issues likely to affect the massage experience,

2) what is required under Washington State law,

3) how to adjust your processes to provide a safer, more inclusive space.

4) anatomy and physiology related to trans-surgeries, with a focus on hormones, binding," and top surgeries (breast reconstruction/ mastectomy).

Day 2 will be mostly hands-on, with a focus on lymphatic massage and scar treatments, as well as the mental and emotional components of treating traumatized tissues.

Participants will earn 16 continuing education hours for massage, including 4 CEUs of Ethics, and come away with a sample intake form and the confidence to provide respectful care to people of all genders.
