Meetup's Motto is "Do what you love!". I love swim hikes..
This is theThird in a series of hikes.
The goal of this series is to swim in EVERY lake in Harriman State Park.
There are many challenges involved in this series.
1. There is no swimming allowed in the Harriman lakes (except one or 2).
2. Some of the lakes are near Roads and we will have to be in and out quickly, or hit them early/late in the day. To avoid rangers/getting a ticket.
3. I plan to setup these hikes so we hit 3-5 lakes per hike.
4. It will be advisable to hike in a swimsuit, and bring a change of clothes for after the hike. Or maybe wear the swimsuit under your street clothes to start the day. BUT...hiking boots are MANDATORY!

For record keeping purposes:
1. A lake is any body of water where you can position yourself in a standing position, and not hit the bottom of the water body.
2. If you have to wade thru swamp/ooky stuff (like green pond)...then it is a pond....not a lake...
3. If a water body is surrounded by swamp with no clear way to get in and swim, we will call it a pond.
4. You cannot consider the lake as having been "bagged" unless you have swum across it. It can be at longest or narrowest point.
5. I will be hosting ONE skinny dipping event during the series, you don't have to participate with the skinny part... but those that do, get brownie points!
6. I will bring along a Permanent marker. Make sure you bring your Harriman map. We willmark off each lake as we swim in them. USING INDELIBLE INK!

THE GEAR.

1. Backpack

2. 3-4 liters of water MINIMUM. (Freeze one or 2 of them)

3. Lunch and dinner.

4. Bug spray

5. Tevas or flip-flops

6. Map of Harriman state park, (preferably the tyvek one, more waterproof!)

7. Hiking boots are MANDATORY! (you will be turned away without them!)

8. Bottle of wine (optional for later)

9. Binoculars, cameras, etc.

The Thirdhike will be ambitious.
It will include some mixture of turkey hill pond, queensboro lake,Silver mine lake, Lake Nawahunta, Summit lake, Upper twin lake, Lower Twin, and Lake te-ata, Barnes lake and lake massawipa. There will be significant bushwacking for this day. (we will have to avoid the campers at the YMCA camp there.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I plan on ending this day with a swim in the dark at the last lake! WHY AM I DOING THIS? August 12th is projected to be the height of the Perseid Meteor shower. We will find a safe place to plant cars where they will not be ticketed by the local police, so that we can enjoy this unique experience! We may also have a campfire. Plan on a VERY LATE time coming out of the woods. I also encourage you to bring extra food for dinner and a bottle of your favorite wine for the star-gazing segment.

Realize this is an ambitious plan, and that some dates may not work out due to temperature or weather related issues, so the dates, and the hike plan, for these are flexible. IF it is raining and cold, we won't swim, so no one gets Pneumonia. You get the picture!

There will be more information, rules, directions, etc to come as we get closer to the events and I map the dates out a little better.

We will be meeting at the Anthony Wayne parking lot.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:

There is NO public transportation to this location. Please coordinate rides. A Fair amount to reimburse your driver is $15.
