Teens Teaching Teens: Protein Purification (Cost: $15)

School science courses not fulfilling your curiosity? Want more hands-things to do? Want laboratory experience? Want to be a scientist? Then this class will be perfect for you! We have designed this class series to be co-taught by our more experienced teen members of BioCurious. We have found that teens learn complex material more readily from peers.

Goals

Get kids interested in biology and science.

Give hands-on experience in the laboratory setting. Learn about DNA and its importance to biology.

What we will be doing

This is the third class in our Teens Teaching Teens class series. We will learn about proteins structure, function, and importance to Biology. We will be conducting purification of a protein expressed from bacteria. In the last of our series, the student will learn, first hand, the power and possibilities of the recombinant DNA revolution that is popping up around us.

In this class, students will take a pellet of bacteria that has been forced to make a gene. This could be a for a biomaterial or a novel drug. The student will isolate the protein from all other proteins from the cell. The student will generate a final product that can be experimented on.

This class is for middle & high school students ONLY. If you are an adult and would like to learn the same skills please see the afternoon session of this class which is for adults. Taught by teenagers experienced in this field (supervised by trained adults).

Cost: $15/teen Please make sure parents do not include themselves in the count for people attending; just how many students are attending.

** Note because this is a lab class, long hair must be tied back and closed toe shoes only, we recommend bringing a notebook to take notes **
