ABOUT THE HIKE: We will take the Metrolink from the Irvine Train Station to Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles and hike approximately one mile to THE BROAD Art Museum. This $140 million contemporary art museum opened to rave reviews and very high public demand for tickets. We have secured a prepaid group reservation for thirty hikers that will require a $10 per person admission charge. Please do not RSVP this event, unless you are fully committed to attending. We will purchase a $10 round trip ticket on the Metrolink 661 departing the Irvine station at 9:08 AM for the 80 minute ride that arrives at Union Station at 10:30 AM. (Tickets are purchased on site at the train station from a vending machine.) If you board the train from a station other than Irvine, look for us on the third car from the front of the train including the locomotive. It will be your responsibility to find the group as we depart Union Station on our hike. We will NOT be stopping at Union Station to use restrooms as there are often long lines there; use restrooms available on the train or museum. We will hike past City Hall and up the Grand Park to THE BROAD. We will plan to take less than a hour to depart the train, walk less than a mile on sidewalks, and meetup at the Museum entrance at 11 AM. Please have ten dollars cash for payment to your event host for our group reservation. Following a brief orientation by museum staff, we will be viewing the collection between 11 AM and 1 PM. We will then take a hour long picnic break in the Grand Park. Following lunch in the park, you can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA, located across the street from THE BROAD. We will regroup in the Park at 3:30 PM for our return walk back to Union Station, taking the last 4:40 Metrolink 666 for the train ride back to Orange County, arrived in Irvine at 5:46 PM. This will prove to be an amazing day of viewing world class contemporary art in architecturally spectacular museum settings!

ABOUT THE BROAD: THE BROAD is a new contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum which is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, opening September 20, 2015. The museum will be home to the nearly 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide. With its innovative "veil and vault" concept, the 120,000 square foot, $140 million building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase the Broad's comprehensive collection and will be headquarters of The Broad Art Foundations world wide lending library. You may view the link to The Broad web site here:

Here's the message from the Broad explaining our group reservation:

"Please arrive at the museums plaza entrance, on the south side of the building, at 11 AM. A Visitor Services Associate will greet you there and then provide a five to ten minute introduction to the museum, after which you will be directed to the galleries to explore on your own. We recommend allowing an hour to an hour and a half for your visit, as we are not able to grant re-entry to the museum. To supplement your visit, audio tours are available, including a collection highlights tour, an architecture tour, an artists on artists tour, and a family tour. Please note that in order to maximize enjoyment for all visitors,The Broad does not allow visitors to lecture or lead groups in the galleries. Please note that any exhibition or installation that requires a separate reservation are not included in a Group Visit reservation."

ADDITIONAL NOTE: While general admission to The Broad is free for individual advance ticketing, these reserved tickets become available once a month and are quickly "sold out" and creating long wait lines for walk up visitors. Therefore we have secured a group reservation that will enable and simplify our access to the museum on arrival. Please plan to have $10 cash available to reimburse your event host for this prepaid group reservation. And again, please do not RSVP this event unless you are fully committed to attending.

ABOUT MOCA GRAND: Founded in 1979, MOCA is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to contemporary art. It is committed to the collection, presentation, and interpretation of work produced since 1940 in all media and to preserving that work for future generations. In a remarkably short time, MOCA has developed one of the nation's most renowned permanent collections, now numbering over 6,800 works. We will be visiting the MOCA Grand Avenue museum. General admission is $15, seniors over 65 ticket price is $10. You may visit the MOCA Grand web site here:

ABOUT THE PICNIC: We use the Grand Park as a rest stop and picnic area, with its beautiful fountains and open space. Picnic items will be carried to the Park or purchased at an adjacent Starbucks. We will use picnic tables and chairs available in the Park, with restrooms located nearby. Please bring food to share for the potluck. BYOB (beverage). As this may be an alcohol restricted area, we will exercise adult discretion. Again, we will regroup in the park for the lunch potluck between 1-2 PM, with museum hopping both before and after the picnic.
