This will be a companion hike for the Beginning Backpackers Kanati Fork Hike on August 16th, and is open to anyone who would like to attend.

We will be meeting at the Kephart Prong TH at 7:00 to set up a car shuttle and then starting the hike at 7:30 am from the AT trailhead at Newfound Gap. This is a moderately strenuous hike with elevation gains of 1800 over 3 miles (so a 600/mile slope) and our average hiking speed will be around[masked] mph since most of the hike is downhill. Total hike is 12+ miles.

The trail starts at 5000' and climbs the AT about 850' over 1.5 miles to the junction with the Sweat Heiffer Creek trail. Well head south for 3.5 miles to the junction with the Grassy Branch trail, descending 2300+ feet to 3500. Well do a 5 mile out-and-back up Grassy Branch, climbing 1800 over 2.5 miles, before reversing to the Kephart Prong junction. We'll probably lunch at the Kephart shelter just north of the junction on our way back down Grassy Branch. Well then finish our 2 mile descent of about 800 to the Kephart Prong trailhead where day hikers will shuttle back to Newfound Gap.

Those doing the Beginning Backpackers Kanati Fork Hike will shuttle or walk 1/3 mile north on 441 to the Kanati Fork Trail Head, drop our day bags and grab our backpacks.

We should be done with the remnants of Hurricane Irma by Thursday into Friday so the weekend should be clear. As always watch the weather this time of year in the Smokies and dress accordingly.
