Come join your fellow hikers on the First Annual Sunrise and Sunset Hiking Ski Day. Skiing - it's like hiking, but with sticks on your feet. This first annual event will be held at Snow Summit Ski Area in Big Bear, Ca. Snow Summit is a premier family-friendly (don't let that worry you, we are also welcome) Southern California destination revered for its nearby skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Drop in at 8,200 feet and experience the best that SoCal has to offer. With over 240 acres of skiable terrain and 31 trails and 14 lifts of all ability levels, Snow Summit boasts 18+ skiable miles. In the event the snow Gods fail to cooperate, Snow Summit has the most consistent snow conditions in Southern California thanks to an extensive snowmaking system, featuring more than 560 hydrants, 330 snow guns, and 40 fans capable of converting 6,000 gallons of water to snow per minute. Unfortunately, playing with the snow guns is prohibited.

If you plan to hit the slopes when the lifts open (8:30AM) AND already have your lift ticket and skis when you leave the house, give yourself a minimum of 3.0 hours driving/parking time from doorstep to chairlift. If you plan to purchase your lift tickets and rent skis on the mountain, add another 1.0 hour. If you chose to arrive later, do not fret, the mountain isn't going anywhere although the later you leave your home, the more traffic, the more lines, you will encounter.

880 Summit Blvd., Big Bear Lake, Ca. 92315

We will not be meeting as a group prior to the start of our ski day. As departure time, traffic, parking, rentals, etc. will determine your arrival time, meeting as a group prior to our first runs of the day would be impossible. For those who would like to meetup with the organizer, Michael, here is my schedule for the morning:

Arrive at ski area/park: 7:45AM

Coffee at Ironwood Coffee located outside the main lodge next to Oakfire Grill. 8:10-8:30AM

Chair 2 - Westridge Park Run for some warmup runs 8:45-9:45

If you would like to find me on the mountain call (949) 981-1085. Ill try to check my phone after every run.

THERE IS A LOT OF INFO HERE. PLEASE THOROUGHLY READ THE POSTING CAREFULLY PRIOR TO POSTING QUESTIONS ON THE COMMENTS PAGE. PRINT THIS POSTING PRIOR TO LEAVING YOUR HOME. THANKS.

GROUP LUNCH: we will be meeting as a group at 11:30AM at the SoCal Marketplace Food Court. The early lunch meeting time, may help us avoid the crowds and sit together. However, my table manners do not improve at elevation. Im just sayin. For those that have an aversion to $15 hamburgers, you can always squirrel away a sack lunch in your backpack or in your car if you arrive early and park in the main parking lot closest to the ski area.

APRES SKI ACTIVITY: For those who would like to avoid the end-of-day traffic down the hill, we will be meeting for a post-ski-day bite to eat at Slopeside Speakeasy located at the base of chair 2. I suspect meetup folks might begin assembling there as early as 2:00PM or earlier. The most ardent skiers will likely call it a day by 3:00PM. The ski lifts close at 4:00PM. This restaurant closes at 8:30PM.

LIFT TICKET PRICES: With the purchase of Snow Summit by Vail Properties (owners of Mammoth, Vail, etc.) dynamic pricing has come to the Southland. Lift tickets for the weekend are generally about $100, but of course, your price may vary dependent on demand and purchase date. 20% discounts (lowering the cost to $80) can be found on line with 72 hour in-advance purchase. Full price lift tickets can be purchased on the mountain; however, ticket lines can be long on occasion. If you plan on purchasing on the mountain, call the resort the day before to check availability. Tap on link below for online, discounted purchase.

DISCOUNT LIFT TICKETS: Discount tickets are available at Costco for $240 for 4 tickets ($60 per lift ticket). So, find three friends and get on over there.

SKI RENTAL SUGGESTIONS: While there are many locations to rent skis along the route to Snow Summit and at the ski area, you will generally find renting skis equipment (skis, boots, poles, helmets) much less expensive at a ski rental location near you. We strongly recommend helmets. Today, you will find upwards of 95% of skiers/snowboarders wear helmets. Unless your head is harder than both trees and the ground, please wear one.

Ski equipment rentals at the ski area: cost for a Standard Package including skis, boots, poles, and helmet will set you back $60 at Snow Summit. "Standard Plus" and "Advanced Packages" a bit more. Lockers are available at the resort for $15. Lockers are located at the Snow Summit Base Area.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: The most familiar route for motorists traveling from Los Angeles, Orange County San Diego and Inland Empire is Interstate 210 to Hwy. 330 (through Highland). However, other routes to consider are Hwy. 38 (through Redlands) a pleasant, scenic drive that offers fewer curves, or Hwy. 18 (through Crestline), which is a great choice and only five miles difference from Hwy. 330. Of course, if you are traveling from the desert communities or Las Vegas take Hwy. 18 (through Lucerne Valley), which offers the least amount of mountain driving, and is the best route in snowy weather because it receives less snowfall.
Or call: Driving Directions (909)[masked] Ext. 348

PARKING: There are four main parking locations for the Snow Summit Ski Area. Do yourself a huge favor and eliminate stress - ARRIVE EARLY.
