It will be a hardy hiker who does all of this trail in one day, for it rivals in ruggedness the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail, twenty-five miles long, from Tuxedo to the Hudson, which few walk at a stretch; but it offers fine sections from five to fifteen miles in length that can be reached at various points by train or bus. Raymond Torrey, May 1, 1927 The New York Times

Welcome to another 24 miler!

Although 91 years later - since the opening of the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail - no one questions the sanity of those, who decide to complete this traverse in one day, it still remains one of the most advanced hikes, suitable only for experienced hikers.

Difficulty: Very Strenuous

Distance: 24 miles

Elevation Gain: 6,000 ft

Estimated Time: 10-12 hours

NOT FOR BEGINNERS! NO DOGS ALLOWED! ABSOLUTELY NO SWEEP!

The Suffern-Bear Mountain trail is a classic north-south trail that runs through the entire length of the park. It is yellow-blazed from the beginning at Suffern to the end at Bear Mountain. It constantly rises up-and-down, and in some places it is steep and challenging. The area around the Pyngyp, near the halfway point of the trail, is especially daunting. But, it is great endurance training for those who look forward to yet another challenge.

IMPORTANT!

Every hiker who signs up for this challenge must understand that you will be responsible for your own preparedness both physical and technical. You should be ready to finish this hike on your own, therefore proper equipment and a fair knowledge of the trail or at least ability to navigate through the park using YOUR OWN trail map or/and compass is paramount.

GEAR

- Northern and Southern Harriman/Bear Mountain Trail Maps (available on AllTrails App)
- Head Lamp plus extra batteries
- Enough food and water for the entire day
- Your own first aid kit.
- Comfortable shoes, rain gear and layers!

LOGISTICS

We will meet at 6:00 am at the Parking Lot at Bear Mountain Lodge and we will shuttle as few cars as possible to the beginning of the trail at Suffern. If you dont have a car, you are responsible for making your own arrangements to carpool. You can also arrive by bus or train at Suffern Train or Bus station (which I strongly discourage you from doing, considering an early morning hour) and walk west on Orange Ave. to the beginning of the trail where we will meet around 6:30 am.

Happy Trails Everyone!
