Please join us for one of the easier 4000 footers. Even though it is a long hike, the trail is relatively easy and not excessively steep, except for a short scramble near the summit.

PREREQUISITE: MUST HAVE ATTENDED OVER 50 MODERATE STRENUOUS HIKE.

This is a STRENUOUS HIKE. The "wait list" rules will be in effect to insure a safe & enjoyable experience.

When you sign up you will automatically go on the wait list which gives me an opportunity to check your hiking history with the group. If you have not hiked with us before, please send me a brief list of your recent hikes through the Meetup messaging system. ---Dave W---

NOTE THIS HIKE IS CONTINGENT ON GOOD WEATHER & SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION IN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER.

This group is for hikers 50-70+(most of us are 55-65) who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time. Hike ratings: easy,easy/moderate, moderate, advanced moderate,moderate/strenuous, strenuous, very strenuous.

We start as a group,we hike as a group and we end as a group. If you think you may not be able to keep up with the group, do not carpool.

There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or morechallenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup,4 Seasons Hiking Group,New England Over 40 Hiking Group).

The hiking Meetup groups, Fellowship Of TheFellowship of the TortoiseandAt a Snails Pacetypically do easier, slower paced hikes than this group.

Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a Summer/Winter Hiking Gear List. This is a dog free hiking group. Everybody must join the group and have a picture up to be on a hike.

Trailhead: From I-93 exit 35, follow US Route 3 for 4.6 miles. Turn right at the brown hiker sign for Gale RiverRoad and go 1.2 miles keeping left at sharp fork and crossing the bridge over the South Branch of Gale River.Garfield trailhead will be on the right.

Description: The conical 4,500-ft. peak of Mt. Garfield is one of the most dramatic and recognizable in the White Mountains. Lying midway between Mt. Lafayette and South Twin Mt., the mountain is the culminating point of rugged Garfield Ridge. Garfield's bare, pointed peak, standing at the head of the great mountain amphitheater that encircles the lush western Pemigewasset Wilderness, is its most striking attribute.

The views of the Wilderness and the surrounding high ridges are among the finest in the White Mountains, an amply rewarding long hike. Most of the trail is fairly easy going with moderate grades, however there is a short steep, rocky stretch with a couple of easy scrambles close to the summit.

Distance: 10 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: 3100' elevation gain

AMC book time: 6.5 hours, 8.5 hours estimated time for our group.
