The Incubator for Nonprofits of Kansas serves to assist with nonprofit start-ups. The following sessions are offered in a 1-day workshop which is designed to provide guidance on how to start a nonprofit and build a foundation for success. You will come away from this workshop knowing what steps you need to take to start a nonprofit, how to write a nonprofit business plan for guidance in building a nonprofit, directions on building a strategic plan and the basics of finding grants and fundraising for your organization.

Session 1: First Things First (1.25 hours)

  • What you need to know before committing
  • Create a vision and mission statement for the organization
  • Select a name for the organization
  • Recruit a governing board
  • Governance and bylaws
  • Articles of Incorporation
  • Complete the IRS application
  • Develop a projected budget
  • Obtain Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS
  • Obtain proper insurance for organization and board members and officers

Session 2: Developing a Nonprofit Business Plan (1.25 hours)

  • Purpose of writing a business plan for your nonprofit - clarify your primary activities and programs to carry out a tax-exempt purpose.
  • Cover page
  • Table of contents
  • Executive Summary Provide an overview of your organization and what needs it will meet in the community, research similar providers in your area and in the state of Kansas to determine the uniqueness of your mission/vision.
  • People overview of the structure of the nonprofit
  • Market opportunities - provide a competitive analysis, collect data that justifies the creation of a new nonprofit organization to support the unique need for your purpose and activities with your target population
  • Programs and services provide an overview of the programs and services that will be offered and how they will be implemented.
