Sierra Ladrone is the prominent and rugged pyramid shaped desert peak south of Albuquerque and just west of Bernardo. We will do the east side route up the peak which is longer and just as hard as the west approach but avoids more tedious scree and talus. This hike is a true loop, up the eastern flanks, where we will summit both peaks. Plan on a challenging off trail adventure with route finding, cactus dodging, and scrambling on exposed rock. The payoff is the scenery, which includes rock fins, interesting geological formations, solitude, and vast panoramas of Central New Mexico. A high clearance car or truck is often needed to get to the starting point. No dogs please.

Terrain: Off-trail and challenging with rock scrambling, using hand and foot holds, cactus dodging, and route finding.

Physical aspect: Difficult with about 4,000 feet of gain in 12 miles.

Who should go: Hike is best suited for fit hikers who are confident with off-trail hiking and rock scrambling with exposure.

Gear: Durable clothing and enough food and water for the day. Make sure you bring a headlamp as the last 3 times I have done this hike we have finished in the dark.

Disclaimer: Hiking and scrambling have inherent dangers that could result in injury or death. If you plan to join me, you agree to do so at your own risk (leader is not responsible).

How to find us:I'll be in or near my white 4-door Toyota Tacoma with a white camper shell and the Peak Freak (PKFREAK) license plate
