Hike Name: Sedona Landmarks Hike

Description: This hike will take us to some of the sites and landmarks that have helped make Sedona famous, including:

Brin's Mesa

Seven Sacred Pools

Devils Kitchen

Coffee Pot Rock

Chimney Rock

Little Sugarloaf Mountain -- We will take a sidetrip to the top of Little Sugarloaf Mtn. and enjoy the 360 degree views at the top, and have lunch here if it is a nice day.

the interesting and unique Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park (https://www.tara.org/stupas/sedona-arizona/)

We will plan to begin the hike in Sedona at 8AM. There will be a carpool (at the McDonald's on Carefree Highway very near I-17) that meets at 6AM, and we will leave the carpool spot NO LATER than 6:15. Directions to the carpool spot and the trailhead are provided below.

The hike will begin and end at the Jordan Road Trailhead. The general route of the hike is as follows: We'll take a counterclockwise loop up and around Brin's Mesa by taking the Brin's Mesa trail north for 2 miles until it meets the Soldier Pass trail; then we will take the Soldier Pass trail south past the Soldier Pass arches and the Seven Sacred Pools; just before we get to Devil's Kitchen, we will take the Teacup trail west, going past the base of Coffee Pot Rock; we will continue west until we get to the Andante trailhead; from here we will take a clockwise loop around Chimney Rock, and on this portion of the hike we will take side trips to the Amitabha Stupa and the summit of Little Sugarloaf Mountain; once we complete the loop around Chimney Rock, we will head east past the Andante trailhead, retracing our steps back to the Soldier Pass trail; then we take a right on the Soldier Pass trail, stopping at Devil's Kitchen, and taking the Jordan Trail and the Cibola Pass trail back to the trailhead. We will be on several trails and the trails are well marked, but it would be easy for someone to take a wrong turn if they weren't paying attention to where they are going.

I imagine that we will be hiking at a pace close to 3.0 mph. Breaks will be few and infrequent. That said, I imagine that most of us will want to stop periodically to admire the views and take some photos. There is no sweep for this hike, so please be sure that you can keep up with the group. I will stop at the junctions and make sure that everyone goes in the right direction.

There will be an optional meeting after the hike for food and refreshments. Given that Sedona is likely to be very crowded on Saturday afternoons at this time of year, I suggest that we go to the Plaza Bonita Mexican restaurant in Cottonwood. The address is 991 S. Main St, Cottonwood. AZ, 86326. To get there, take 89A from Sedona to Cottonwood. Once you get to Cottonwood, go through the traffic light at 260, and the restaurant will be on the right, next to a Best Western. To get back to Phoenix, take 260 to I-17. The Google Maps link to Plaza Bonita is here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Plaza+Bonita+Mexican+Restaurant/@34.7222873,-112.0053873,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x872d05792bc1f287:0xff360c71816425c1!8m2!3d34.7222829!4d-112.0031986?hl=en

Difficulty: Difficult, due to distance; the trail is rocky in places, but most of the trail is dirt, so from that standpoint the hiking is relatively easy

Mileage: 13 miles

Elevation: 4,500 at the trailhead; 5,050 at the high point of the hike; 4,400 at the low point of the hike

Accumulated gain: AEG is 2,400

Configuration: Out-and-back, with a loop at each end

Guesstimated hike time: 5-6 hours, depending on how much time we take for sightseeing and other diversions

Recommended: 3 liters of water, good hiking shoes, sunscreen

Fees: Parking fee of $5 at the trailhead unless you have a Red Rocks Pass or an America the Beautiful pass, in which case there is no fee

Bathroom/water: Bathroom at the trailhead, but no water

Carpool: There will be a carpool that meets at the McDonald's on W. Carefree Highway, just east of I-17. The address is 3140 W. Carefree Highway in Phoenix, 85086. The google map link to the carpool spot is: https://www.google.com/maps/place/McDonald's/@33.798978,-112.130076,17z/data=!3m2!4b1!5s0x872b63c3a6eec0ed:0x7edf0a3ae4304b95!4m5!3m4!1s0x872b63c3a702ab89:0x1cf69a332e4ce7c!8m2!3d33.7989736!4d-112.1278873?hl=en

The round-trip distance from the carpool spot to the trailhead and back is around 180 miles, so please be sure to compensate your carpool driver -- $10 per person sounds about right.

Directions: The hike will begin and end at the Jordan Road Trailhead. This trailhead is sometimes called at the Cibola Pass Trailhead or the Jim Thompson Trailhead; in fact, a sign at the Trailhead says "Jim Thompson Trailhead". However, Google Maps refers to it as the Jordan Road Trailhead, so that is what I will roll with.

To get to the trailhead, take I-17 north to exit 198, which is Highway 179; take Highway 179 west into Sedona; go straight through several roundabouts until you come to Highway 89A; take a right on Highway 89A to the north; go about a half mile and turn left onto Jordan Road; take Jordan Road until it ends at W. Park Ridge Dr.; take a left at W. Park Ridge Dr.; continue on W. Park Ridge Dr. until it ends (it ends at the trailhead). Note that the last half mile of W. Park Ridge Dr. is a gravel road, but most any passenger car can get to the trailhead.

Here is the Google maps link to the trailhead: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Jordan+Road+Trailhead/@34.8879795,-111.7706292,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x872da17b706b6d3d:0xaeb0cdb93de18941!8m2!3d34.8879751!4d-111.7684405?hl=en
