SCCTE 2020 conference: Reading the Past; Writing the Future

A perusal ofthenews each day brings numerous reminders ofthevitalwork we do as English teachers. In order to help students become more informed, critical, and empathetic citizens, we invite them to read the voices of the unfamiliar, to imagine how our choices today can inform our future, and to delve into the past in order to develop a nuanced understanding of our present. Furthermore, we know that active citizens must also be agile and powerful writers who know how to reach out to real audiences in order to shape the future.

Opportunity for Advanced Placement Teachers

TheSCCTE conferencewill once again offersessionsfor Advanced Placement English teachersto participate inscoring training andsimulated scoring of essays written by their own students. Since therollout of AP English resources from the College Boardincludes new analytic rubrics that will be used in scoring essaysstarting with the2020 AP exam administration, this will be a great opportunity for AP English Language and Literatureteachersto get more comfortable with this new approach to scoring.

AP-styled essayprompts using new stable prompt wording will be provided to participating teachers in advance of the conference so that teachers may have their students write essays that will be scored on site by other teachers. Sessions will be facilitated by Terry Filippo, ourSCCTE APOutreach Coordinator and College Board-Endorsed AP English Language and Literature Consultant. If you are interested in these sessions, please add this session to your purchase at no charge when registering for the event. Participants will receive additional information from Terry before the conference begins, so make sure your email is correct.
