Three- or Four-Day Backpack

We will watch the weather forecasts for Tuesday, July 14, 2020, through Monday, July 20, 2020, for the best 3-4 weather days to be on the trip. We will begin at Benchmark going south on the Continental Divide Trail for 3.4 miles and turning west onto Hoadley Creek Trail for approximately 5 miles. Total elevation gain for the first day will be just over 1500 feet. Well set up camp at the base of the Hoadley Creek escarpment with a good water source from Hoadley Creek. On day 2, after securing our food and supplies, and needing only a day pack for water and a lunch, we will take the day to go up and over Hoadley Pass, and explore the vistas on the other side of the pass as time allows. Elevation gains on day 2 will be less than 1000 feet. We will return to our base camp for the evening.

What we do on day 3 will be determined by what trails are open and closed. If possible, we will take a side trip up and over Stadler Pass on the south side of Scarlet Mountain. Again, needing only a day pack, the elevation gain will be approximately 1200 feet and about 4 miles round trip mileage from base camp. But, there was a lightening caused fire in early September 2019 on the Stadler Creek side of the pass, closing access to the pass.If it is open by July 2020 and can be safely traveled, we can hike to Stalder Pass. If it is closed, we have two options - either exit back to Benchmark or explore alternate trails. If we are able to hike to Stadler Pass, we will return to base camp for our last evening, and make our way back to Benchmark on day 4 in reverse of our route in.

There is no financial commitment at this point. The commitment is with time, setting July 14 to July 20 aside on your calendar, and in equipment necessary to backpack, hike, and camp. An initial organizational meeting will be held in March 2020 to be followed with at least one more meeting in June 2020.

This will be a stunning hike and will be in the company of those who savor the sights, sounds, and smells of the wilderness. This is an area not seen by many and will not be forgotten! Interested ladies can speak with Katie or June. For planning purposes, names and numbers of interested backpackers should be finalized by spring 2020 (March preferably, no later than April 30).
