Our Saturday Seminars use a "lab school" model, in which teachers and students participate in the presenters workshop lesson together in small groups, generally including the following:
  • mini-lesson on writing craft
  • study of a mentor text
  • demonstration of innovative and engaging pedagogical strategies
  • large blocks of time for students and teachers to write
  • sharing writing in small groups or whole group


Event Schedule

  • 9:30-10:00am - Registration in front of Sweeney Hall Courtyard
  • 10-10:30am - Writing Games Warm-up
  • 10:30-12:30pm - Saturday Seminar lesson led by Teacher Consultant



Course Descriptions

Grades K-2 - Integrating Student Talk into the Writing Process

Students will have practice talking about their topic as a pre-writing step. Students will use their talking points as a springboard for writing.

Note: Parents of K-2 students are expected to stay for the workshop, either in the classroom or the parent workshop.

Grades 3-5 - Art/Writing Connections: Watercolor is Your Parachute!

Writers, do you want to use art to help tell stories and enrich your personal narratives? Then join us for a fun-filled morning of writing and using water-color and other media to bring stories to life!

Grades 6-7 - Stuck in the Middle?

Writers, you need not fear getting lost in the middle of your narratives any longer. Through exercises, design choices, and examining model texts, we will practice expert strategies for writing clear, engaging middles. Let your great beginning and stunning ending be complemented by your strategic, clear middle.

Grades 8-12 - Write for a Cause: Create an Op-Ed Piece

Write like the pros in the newspapers. Learn the basics of writing an op-ed piece using mentor texts and craft moves. Try out your own version of an op-ed piece.
