About the park: Sam McDonald, a unique and interesting 850-acre facility, is located west of La Honda on Pescadero Creek Road. The park actually represents contrast between two separate natural environments. The north-westernly half, near 400 acres between Pescadero Creek Road and Highway 84, is principally a lush growth redwood forest. The 450-acre portion, southeasterly , is primarily open ridge, grassy knolls and patchy brush areas. From this ridge area, vistas of the Butano and Skyline Ridges, and the Pacific Ocean can be seen.

Hike Description: This is a moderate hike. There is one extended uphill (about a mile's worth of up) - although it is pretty much continuously up, it is not too steep. And there is one section of downhill that is a little steep - some people might prefer to have walking stick for this section.

Parking lot by the restrooms and the ranger station - Heritage Grove Trail to the top of the ridge - detour to see the outside of the Sierra Club Hiker's Hut - connecting trail to the Towne Fire Road - Towne Fire Road - scenic view - Towne Fire Road - East Brook Trail - Towne Fire Road - Big Tree Trail - Parking lot
