It's Rigby's Birthday Hike! As a special treat, Rigby plans to take us to the Clatsop Alps and West Onion Peak.
West Onion Peak is the highest point of the Clatsop Alps overlooking Cannon Beach and the Pacific Ocean at 3080 ft. West Onion Peak is also the site of an old lookout and does have views out the north and east.
Distance: 13 miles
Ascent: 3600+ ft
Creek Crossings: No - we may scramble up a waterfall though
Difficulty: Moderately crazy (distance, offtrail, scrambling, bushwacking)
Offtrail: Yes, some
Forest Pass: No
For the drivers: $10
Items to bring: sunscreen, hat, long shirt, extra socks, birthday gift for Rigby!
The first 3 miles we will be walking on gravel logging roads, but we will head offtrail up the summit ridge of the Clatsop Alps before rejoining the logging road, then another offtrail to West Onion Peak. We will take a break at the old lookout site and enjoy the views. There will be some surprises along the way.
There is some offtrail.
Expect lots of ocean views. The forecast for Saturday is partly sunny.
This is an all-day hike. Please do not expect to be back any particular time.
I plan to stop after the hike and get dinner.
My Hiking Style:
I have three basic rules for hiking: 1) Be safe 2) Respect the environment 3) Be healthy and 4) Have fun! I do not consider myself a "fast" nor "slow" hiker. We will take a number of short breaks, as well as a lunch break, keeping in mind to finish the hike before dark. At the end of the day, my hope is that the hiking group feels they have had an adventure for all the right reasons.
