The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland and along the Antietam Creek as part of the Maryland Campaign of the Army of Northern Virginia. It is known as the Bloodiest One-Day Battle in American History when 23,000 men were wounded or killed in 12 hours of savage combat between two armies with over 93,000 men actively engaged in the battle.
This weekend marks the 155th anniversary of the battle and STAR #474 will ride to visit various locations of the battlefield. We will depart from the Golden Corral and generally follow the path that the Army of Northern Virginia did following their victory at Second Manassas and Ox Hill when General Lee led his army into Maryland to take the battle into the north.
