Overnight Backpack at Race Brook Falls campsite and hike to Mount Race to watch the Perseids Meteor shower. This event is limited to 10 people.

Location: Sheffield Massachusetts

Date: Saturday August 12 Sunday August 13th

This backpacking event (suitable for beginners) includes day hikes (not beginner levels) on Saturday and Sunday, overnight camping at the Race Brook Falls campsite, and a night hike to view the Perseids Meteor shower.

The Perseids Meteor shower will peak late Saturday Night August 12th into the pre-dawn hours of Sunday August 13th. Note: A waning Gibbous moon will light up the night and pre-dawn sky preventing us from viewing the Meteor shower
in total darkness (a moonless night is the ideal situation).

On Saturday August 12th, meet at the Race Brook Falls Trail head on Route 41 in Suffield MA at 9:00 am. We will hike up the Race Brook Falls Trail to the Race Brook Falls campsite. After setting up our tents, we will go on an afternoon hike
on the AT. This will be determined on the day of the hike. Options include: Mt. Everett, Mt. Bushnell, Jug End, or Sages Ravine.

After dinner, somewhere around 9:00 pm we will hike South on the AT to Mount Race (approximately 1.5 miles from our campsite) and spend time observing the meteor shower and then head back to camp. The best time to observe the meteor shower is in the pre-dawn hours, so I plan on spending all night on top of Mount Race with the hope of catching the peak of the meteor shower and watching a sunrise! (anyone is free to join me). The top of Mount Race consist of jagged rocks, so bring something padded to sit on. If the skies are cloudy or it rains, we will hang out at the campsite.

The hike on Sunday will be determined on the day of the hike.

Note to beginner hikers:
You will need the following equipment to participate on this backpacking trip -
Backpacking tent
Backpacking sleeping bag
Air Mattress or pad
Stove
Water filter
Food for dinner and breakfast
Food/snacks for daytime hiking
