What we'll do
A repeat of the challenging and beautiful hike I hosted last year, Quartz Peak is just outside the southwest limits of the city but is a long drive away to its Buckeye area trailhead. Although the trail is only 4.something miles long, its an unrelenting climb up a sun drenched ridge line capped by a chunk of quartz the size of a Volkswagen Microbus. I will describe this a a moderate difficulty level, similar to hiking Toms Thumb from the west. This is definitely a must-do for anyone with a valley climbing bucket list.
What to bring
Bring your well broken in hikers or boots, water (i suggest two or more liters), and sun protection. The entire hike will be without shade.
Important to know
The drive to the trailhead involves a dirt road and sand wash that can be negotiated with two wheel drive but high clearance is recommended. I can bring four in my car.
Also, the summit climb involves a small amount of exposure. Those with an extreme fear of heights may not want to climb the last 30 feet or so.
Meet: I will be at the 7/11 near Target at the I17/101 interchange at 7:15 for any north siders who want to ride with me. Official meet place is the Walmart at Estrella Parkway and I10 at 8AM. After the hike, we will sup and imbibe at Saddle Mountain Brewing.
