Bomba and Plena are two musical styles from Puerto Rico used by its people to instill resilience into its communities. Despite centuries of hardship, Puerto Ricans have used the rebellious Bomba and the defiant Plena to uplift their spirits during trying and challenging times. This presentation will include examples of the joyful Puerto Rican spirit through these art forms as they overcame slavery, adapted to becoming a United States territory, mass-migrated to the United States in the mid-Twentieth Century, survived the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017, and forced the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosello in August 2019. This show is a feast of Puerto Rican music, culture, and history!
All tickets are half-price ($10) thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Howard County Arts Council (HCAC). Thank you!!
