*POSTPONED*
Hi All! Mother Nature is not being real user-friendly this year. Calico is expecting winds up to 30 mph on Saturday, the 7th, making field work a chore instead of a treat. Sand blowing at that speed is a little too intense of an exfoliant, so we are going to postpone until next Saturday, the 14th. Thank you!

Dear Volunteer Diggers,

Due to the excessive vandalism at the historic Calico Early Man Site over the last few months, Friends of Calico can no longer host our monthly digs at that location. Instead, we will be conducting archaeological investigations at other sites within the Calico Mountains Archaeological region beginning in October.

The change in focus means we are limited to hosting experienced archaeologists, archaeologists in-training and members of the Friends of Calico. The new field work locations include both historic and prehistoric sites. Fieldwork activities will include relocation of sites, mapping and surface collecting, and test pit excavations as appropriate. We will be following up at the museum with artifact analysis. all wrong

Although we have a few tools (buckets, trowels), we recommend that you bring your own. Also bring hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, hat, scarf, gloves, sunscreen, a bagged lunch and lots of water. The sites will be "rough", so there will be no running water or restroom facilities available.

For those who are inexperienced and interested in learning about archaeology, we will be posting meetup times in the near future to work at the museum once a month on the Calico collections (experienced archaeologists are welcome too). This will give you the opportunity to learn about the non-fieldwork aspects of archaeology. You may be able to transition to working out at the sites once you have some museum experience. all wrong

However, you may purchase a membership to the Friends of Calico, a non-profit organization, which finances the ongoing scientific investigation. Yearly membership is $20 family, $15 individual and $10 students. Sign up at our site at

****The Meet Up Locations and Camping Information

Our meet up location has changed. We will be meeting near the entrance to the Calico entrance road. To get there, just get off Minneola Road, head towards the gas station and we will be down on the surface road past Cali Burger.

The campgrounds that were located at our site are no longer open for use. Please contact the Yermo KOA campground or check out the Owl Canyon Campgrounds in Barstow if you would like to camp before/after our meetup.

We look forward to seeing you all there and thank you again for your positive feedback and support. It is greatly appreciated!!

How to find us:Meet at the end of the paved road past the gas station and Cali Burger.
