Diego Rivera's 1940 "Pan American Unity" mural, his largest one ever (74 feet wide by 22 high) currently lives in the lobby of a theater at City College's Ocean St. Campus. Sketch it here before it's moved to SFMOMA to be installed as part of a big Rivera show in 2020. We'll also have special access to the adjacent Visual Arts building to see the "Democracy" art show by former Chronicle illustrator Lance Jackson. If you don't want to sketch the art, there are nice views out over the Southern part of the city from a nearby terrace.
10:00 Meet in the theater lobby in front of the mural
12:00 Meet back in the lobby to share sketches and chat. (Don't know if there is any coffee in the area.)
More about the Rivera mural from the Chronicle: Officially called The Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and of the South on the Continent, it draws together dancing Yaqui Indians and Shasta Dam hardhats, the plumed serpent Quetzalcoatl (the Aztec creator deity), Abe Lincoln, Simn Bolvar, Henry Ford, Benito Mussolini and Josef Stalin. Theres an auto plant stamping machine, and Charlie Chaplin playing Hitler in The Great Dictator. Chaplins estranged wife, actress Paulette Goddard, with whom Rivera had an affair, appears in a panel near Riveras ex, painter Frida Kahlo.
GETTING THERE
Car: There are vast parking lots nearby on Phelan. Park on the Northeastern corner of the lot, near Riordan High School. (Lock your car and put all valuables out of sight. it's not a dangerous neighborhood, but cars get broken into a lot.)
Transit: The 43 bus will get you closest, but the 8, 29, 49 and K will drop you at the southern end of the campus. It's a 15 minute walk from Balboa Park BART (or catch the 43 at the south end of the BART station, on Geneva). The J and M stops are by the BART station. LINKS
