UTM is marking its 50th anniversary with an afternoon student poster session and evening lecture series, celebrating scientific research. The poster session and lectures will be open to all UTM students and trainees and to researchers from visiting research institutions. Prizes will also be awarded to students and trainees participating in the poster session. The field of Magnetic Resonance or NMR as it is known to aficionados, is also just over 50 years old. NMR is a form of spectroscopy that is used in scientific circles to identify structures of small molecules, fingerprint metabolites in human fluids, depict structures of polymers, proteins, and other macromolecules, often with atomic resolution. NMR also allows us to peer into kinetics of systems and dynamics of molecules and over the last 50 years this window into organization, structure and dynamics has brought about a profound understanding of life at the level of molecules.
Our two speakers, Ad Bax (National Institutes of Health, NIH) and Lewis Kay (UofT), will provide a highlight of their recent research initiatives in biology and chemistry using NMR, in a sessioncentered around proteins and life molecular perspectives. Ad Bax (https://spin.niddk.nih.gov/bax/) is one of the foremost international scientists in the field of magnetic resonance and biology. Lewis Kay (http://pound.med.utoronto.ca/)is a noted physical chemist, university professor, member of the Royal Society, and was recognized this year with the Order of Canada and Gairdner Award.
