Outside the Box is a case competition held at the University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus that aims to connect charitable organizations with the drive and innovative ideas of university students. The first of its kind at UTM, this competition will draw talent from all fields of study, unlike similar events that focus on the fields of commerce and management.
This year, the goal of the competition is for students to design and present a unique marketing strategy for ShelterBox to help them expand their reach in Canada and build their community of donors. Delegates will apply their technical skills learnt in university and will gain valuable real-world experience in working within budgets, finetuning presentations and pitching their ideas in a professional and convincing manner.
The skills that delegates will learn after participating in this competition can be applied in a variety of fields and careers. With this event, we hope to inspire future leaders and build in them a societal awareness that many businesses and organisations will demand now and even more so in the future.
"ShelterBox is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital. No ifs. No buts. When people are plunged into crisis, normality is suspended. But good, quality shelter can cut through the chaos. This is why we provide the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives. We do things differently. We were born different. We started life as a small organization in the UK and have grown into an international organization with offices in seventeen countries around the world, including Canada. We dont follow the crowd weve carved our own path that leads straight to the families we support."
The competition will consist of two rounds:
1st round: Teams will present their ideas in front of a panel of esteemed judges, using a detailed rubric.
2nd round: The top 4 teams will present their ideas to Shelterbox and other delegates.
Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Other prizes can be won at the event and in the weeks leading up to it. Stay updated by following the Facebook event page!
Workshops will be held by successful professionals to give delegates the opportunity to learn and improve vital soft skills that would be required in the workplace and in daily life.
