As Montessori educators, we are adept at understanding the needs and tendencies of the children we serve. By "following the child" we are able to guide them toward normalization and the passion and discipline for life-long learning. Regrettably, we tend to be less skilled at understanding the needs and tendencies of the parents in our schools. As a result, we miss opportunities to learn more about the child through the window of the family; do not receive the kind of parent support at home and at school we desire; and end up losing families before their child has experienced the full scope of our program.

In this workshop, we will explore the following topics on parents relations, engagement, and retention:

  • How teachers can gain a deeper understanding of parents' school experiences (as children and adults), as well as their expectations, aspirations, and anxieties about their child's learning and development.
  • How knowledge of parents' needs and tendencies can be utilized to better understand the child, as well as strengthen our working relations and communications with the family.
  • How responsive parent-teacher communications can further parent education; Montessori-friendly parenting; volunteer work, and a commitment to keep their child enrolled for the duration of the program.
  • How teachers can communicate difficult and delicate issues in a manner that motivates parents to be receptive and supportive of teachers and their child's needs.
