Overview

The goal of this class is for students to become comfortable working in the Nova Labs metal shop. Students will learn how to safely and properly use the following tools:

Horizontal Band Saw
Abrasive Cutoff Saw
4-1/2" Angle Grinder
6" Bench Grinder
1" x 30" Belt Sander
Drill Press
Media Blaster

Why a women's yellow tools class, you ask?
-While all our other classes are open to all genders, there's often a level of intimidation when it comes to metal shops and women. We want to create a space that brings that level of intimidation down, and hopefully the more women we see in the metal shop the more women will come to the metal shop. Come be a part of our inaugural Women's Yellow Tools sign off in the Metal Shop and be a part of the change!

A little about your instructor:
I started working in workshops with my grandfathers on random projects over my youth, and eventually pursued a Mechanical Engineering degree. During my time at college, I started working in the undergraduate machine shop teaching fellow students how to use the machinery (most of what we'll be learning in this Yellow course, and some equipment equivalent to red). After college, I started in ship maintenance while adding more skills with a welding project on my own time. I have never lost my appetite for making, and sharing knowledge to help others make. During my time with Nova Labs, I have helped start up the Metalshop Mondays which is very similar to the Woodshop Open Office hours in that we provide supervised use of machinery if you haven't gotten signed off or you just need help on your project.
