Invincible Lake & Mount Nomad - Full Day Hike
The heatwave is expected to continue in the next couple of weeks, so a trail with a lake at the end seems like a great reward for an arduous hike. And make no mistakes, this is a demanding hike indeed. We start at the Upper Kananaskis Lake (1725 m), ascend to 2,375 on the ridge overlooking the lake, descend to the Invincible lake at 2,255 and then up again to 2,544 on the summit of Mount Nomad; this includes some off-trail uphill trudge through deadfall, about 400m altitude gain in less than 1 km. But as I've mentioned, the lakes awaits us at the end, so for people planning to cool off, bring the necessary gear (water sandals, bathing suits)
Distance:About 16km return
Roundtrip Time:8 hours est. + driving time
Height gain:about 1400 m in cumulative elevation
Attendance: this hike will be limited to 10 adventurers
Note:I believe that one lifetime (and maybe even two) are not enough to explore the many trails that start even on a maximum three hours drive from Calgary, so I'm (almost) never doing the same hike twice. That means that even if I will have a GPS with a track loaded for this hike, some route finding may still be needed.
RSVP:Update your RSVP as early as possible, at least 48 hours before the meeting time. Please reply to all the questions from the RSVP. If you do not reply, you will remain in the waiting list.
TRIP WAIVER AND CONDITIONS:You must sign a CORA trip Waiver to attend this event.I will have the waiver with me at the Parking Lot.
Level:This trip is a levelDifficulty Level5 Trip. This hike is not for beginner hikers, because of both the length and the high altitude gain. Please be realistic about your abilities. Read about this on the internet or in the hiking books. A few suggestions:
Hike #21 in 'where locals hike' by Cathy & Craig Copeland
Trip #75 (Invincible Lake) and Trip #75A - (Mt Nomad) from Gillean Daffern's excellent guidebook, "Kananaskis Country Trail Guide 4th Edition, Volume 1".
Driving and Directions:We will follow Hwy 1 westbound and then Higway 40 south. From the junction with Kananaskis Lakes Trail we'll follow that one and park at the North Interlakes Day use.
Transport:CORA trips start at the trailhead. As a convenience to participants only, we meet at the meeting point in Calgary then car pool from there. Please be on time. We will not wait around long, the hour displayed above is when we leave not when we arrive. You may choose to meet us at the trailhead, but please advise us ahead of time. Suggested gas donation: $15.
Gear:Bear spray, 2-3 L of water, layers, hat, poles, food, sun screen, lunch & snacks, personal first aid kit; mountain boots and technical t-shirt/ blouse - no runners and no cotton. Sense of humour :)
