This trail starts in the forest, then continues on through the meadow up to Mason Lake, then up through some more forest, then more meadow (lots of wildflowers!), with stunning views at the top. When you reach the top, try to count how many lakes you can see from there. There are a lot (it's called the Alpine Lakes Wilderness for a reason!).

This is a strenuous hike, and all participants should have previously hiked Mt. Si or something similar. We will be ascending at an effort level similar to 2.5 hours up Mt. Si (about 2 mph on steady uphill trail). Please to not sign up if you are not able to hike up 3,500 feet at this pace.

Elevation gain: 3,584 feet
Distance (round trip): 11 miles
Highest point: 5,584 feet
WTA detailed trail description (with trip reports): http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/mount-defiance

Recent trip reports indicate that this trail is snow free, so we won't need any snow equipment. Participants should bring bug spray, sunscreen, food, water (at least 2 liters, minimum), along with the rest of the ten essentials.

Driving directions from P&R to trailhead (look for Ira Springs Trailhead): https://goo.gl/maps/aAHJGbZLCTQ2

One-way drive from from P&R to trailhead: 1 hour
Required parking pass for trailhead: NW Forest Pass

Primary meeting spot is Green Lake P&R at 7 AM. Look for me on the section north of 65th St., underneath I-5. For those who wish to carpool from the Eastside, I suggest Eastgate P&R @ 7:15. However, you will need to arrange this through the comments section, as the primary group (including myself) will not be stopping there. If driving directly to the Ira Springs trailhead, please aim to arrive at 8 AM. Look for the rest of the group at the sign next to the restrooms marking the official trailhead.

How to find us:North side of 65th St., underneath I-5
