Mount Thielsen is a 2 hour drive South on 97 in the Southern Cascades. It's a 10 mile roundtrip hike with 3800' gain in elevation.

The trail head has a large parking lot, pit toilets and a few picnic tables. The first four miles gradually climbs on a well-maintained forest trail where a massive blow down happened years ago to the junction with the PCT. At this junction we'll take the West Ridge trail for the last mile to 'Chicken Ledge' at 9100'. There is loose rock and there a few areas that require a little scrambling. At the ledge we'll have lunch and take photos before heading back down. If it's clear we'll be able to see Mt. Shasta to the south, Crater Lake, Mt. Bailey, Diamond Peak and possibly Sisters. This first mile going back down will be slow because of the rocks and scree.

In your daypack carry at least a liter of water and lunch/snacks. It'll be cool at the top so have a light jacket, hat and glove. Poles are highly recommended.

Dogs are permitted on this trail but I discourage them. The sharp rocks will cut up their paw pads. I know this from experience.

We will meet at the Wal-mart in Bend to carpool to the TH. I can take three people comfortably with packs. Please be prompt and text me if your plans change or if you'll be late. 541.281.1703. I would like to leave Bend by 7:15am.

Directions: Head south on Highway 97 for 75 miles to the junction with Highway 138. Head east on Highway 138 for 21 miles to the Diamond Lake Junction. From here head north on Highway 138 in the direction of Diamond Lake for 1.4 miles to the signed Mount Thielsen trailhead (right side of the road).

.

How to find us:Look for the bright yellow Subaru at the southwest corner of the parking lot (on the left as you enter the parking lot). This is where the motor homes and trailers park
