Jul 15 7:30AM - 8:30AM

Join us as we hike 4.5 miles out & back from Carver's Gap on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail to Roan High Knob!

High Knob is the highest point in Tennessee outside of the Great Smoky Mountains, and the 17th-highest peak in the eastern United States. The Appalachian Trail crosses High Knob's western slope, with a well-marked spur trail leading to the summit! For those interested in carpooling, we will meet at 7:30 am at the Publix on Weaverville Boulevard. Look for the hiking leader's silver Toyota Prius in the lot.

Once assembled, we will drive to Carver's Gap where we will convene at 9 am. Starting at approximately 9:15 am, we will hike the Appalachian Trail to the junction of the Roan High Knob trail, taking the spur to the summit. We will have an early lunch on the summit. The hiking leader will share some of his experiences with Leave No Trace principles, and we will discuss challenges of preserving the backcountry experience along this nearly 2200-mile trail.

Participants should pack a bag lunch and 2-3 liters of water. A camera and binoculars are recommended. All participants must sign a liability waiver. No dogs or unaccompanied minors are permitted.

Registration for this outing will open on July 1. Since this hike has a limit of 15 participants, if you RSVP and your plans change, please be sure to change your RSVP so Meetup members who are wait-listed have an opportunity to participate. Thank you!
