Olympic National Forest. Via Upper Big Quilcene. Our destination features a lush forested trail to expansive mountain and Dungeness Valley views at the pass and a staggering 360-degree panorama at the summit of Buckhorn Mountain. Deception, Constance, Baker, Rainier, Adams, and dozens of other peaks can be seen, as well as Puget Sound.

Are you a driver or passenger? Do you have a Northwest Forest Pass? Type your answers in the pop-up box when you join the waiting list. (Answer via private message or comment here if the box doesn't pop up.)

Drivers preferred. I move passengers to "going" after enough hikers agree to drive or act as backup.

Where We're Hiking:

Marmot Pass & Buckhorn Mountain (WTA)
Weather forecast (NWS)
Driving directions (Google Maps)

Rating: Very difficult. 4,800 feet elevation gain. 12 miles roundtrip.

Pace: Fast-Moderate. 2.5+ mph. Be able to maintain speed.

Road condition & trail notes: Five latest trip reports suggest secondary road to the trailhead is suitable for all vehicles. Trail is mostly snow-free, but we may encounter a few patches around Camp Mystery. From Marmot Pass to Buckhorn Mountain the path is covered in loose scree, challenging footing. Poles recommended. See WTA trip reports for more details.

Plan to spend the day and evening with us: Traffic, road and trail conditions, ferry schedule, and other factors may preclude us from getting there and back by a certain time.

Requirements & restrictions: Northwest Forest Pass per car. No dogs. Everyone meetsat Northgate to pick rides. We wait for others at trail junctions, when unsure of the right direction, and hike together where route-finding is necessary. Arrive at Northgate on time, as we must catch the Edmonds/Kingston ferry.

Cost: Ferry plus driver's comp will be $24 per passenger, assuming a standard vehicle. Will confirm at point of purchase. Bring more cash just in case.

How to find out if you're going: Check this page or make sure your notification settings allow you to receive email from Meetup; you should receive an email if I change your RSVP from waiting to going.

Be experienced & prepared: Not a beginner hike. You alone are responsible for your safety and comfort. Bring enough water, sun block, bug spray, and other essentials, so you are not dependent on others. SeeHiking 101 (WTA)
.

No-shows and late cancelsare marked on your record and may prevent attendance on future hikes. Be mindful of fellow hikers on the waiting list and manage your RSVP in a timely manner. Be a "definite" when you join.
