Longs Peak - Keyhole Route (14,255')

Distance: 14.5 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: 5,100'

Difficulty: Class 3 with significant exposure. A helmet and scrambling experience is recommended.

When people ask "are you doing this mountain" Longs Peak is definitely the most requested. This makes sense because this is an amazing mountain with routes to challenge anyone.

Plan: We'll meet at the trailhead at 3:00am on August 12th and leave no later than 3:10am. From the trailhead we'll hike to the Boulderfield near the Keyhole. The hike will continue on through the Keyhole to the summit in small groups. I'll be hiking with a few people from the Boulderfield to the summit on different route, but should meetup with people on the summit and on the descent. As always, it is very important that everyone review the route and be self-sufficient (even though people are encouraged not to hike alone).

Route Info:
Some information on hiking along this route can be found at the site below. Please review the route before the trip. https://www.14ers.com/route.php?route=long1&peak=Longs+Peak

Directions to Trailhead from 14ers.com:
The trailhead is west of Colorado 7 and can be reached from the north or the south. For the northern approach, drive 9.2 miles south from the intersection of US 36 and CO 7 to the turnoff for the Ranger Station. For the southern approach, drive north 10 miles from the junction of CO 7 and CO 72 on the Peak to Peak Highway to the Ranger Station turnoff. From the turnoff drive west 1 mile to the trailhead. Note: Car-camping is not allowed in the parking area. There is a tent campground nearby and a couple of full campgrounds near Meeker Park.

Equipment:
Please bring enough a water proof outer layer, plenty of water, some food, and sunscreen. It is also highly recommended that you bring the ten essentials. The complete list can be found at http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html

Disclaimer:
By attending this hike you are entirely responsibility for your own safety and agree that the event host, organizer, the 14er Fan Club, and Meetup are in no way liable in the event of your injury or death. Mountaineering in Colorado can be very dangerous and many people have died on the 14ers. Weather, terrain and other people can put you in a situation where your knowledge and experience will be vital. If you are new to these peaks, I urge you to pick up a book on mountaineering safety and make sure your basic navigation skills (map+compass, not only GPS) are up-to-par and you can rely on them in a tough situation. Altitude sickness, dehydration, and fast-building storms are the most common problems. Please be in shape and self-sufficient. Although this is a group activity you are completely responsible for your own well being.
