Time for a classic! North Fork Mountain is often described as one of the best hikes in the area, with viewpoint after viewpoint yielding magnificent valley views. Of course, there is a catchthe trail is entirely dry along its 24 mile length. Youll need to carry all your water with you.

The plan: meet at the north lot of the Vienna metro station by 8 a.m. (I realize that metro schedules mean that some might arrive closer to 8:15 a.m.) From Vienna, we'll drive the following route (http://goo.gl/maps/3RB9b), which should have us to the northern trailhead shortly after 11 a.m. There, we'll drop off half the cars, and drive to the southern trailhead, like so (http://goo.gl/maps/Eu83Y). We should be parked and ready to hike by noon.

The hiking itself should be straightforward, with splits of about 12-12. Well camp near the intersection of FR 79 with the trail. General merriment will ensue. Sunday, we finish off the trail, reverse the shuttle to grab all the cars, and find a spot for a celebratory post-backpack meal. Then, back to Vienna.

DCULers have maps! The maps for this route can be found here: https://www.hikingupward.com/MNF/NorthForkMountain/images/Map.pdf Average temperatures for this time of year are in the low to mid 60s during the day and low 30s at night. As we get closer to the trip, well have a better sense of how the forecast is shaking out.
On the water question--how much should you bringcarry as much as you need for two days of backpacking. Ill probably have about 5 to 6 liters on me.

Applicantsplease send me your gear list by March 20. If you have any questions, let me know!

The fine print:
- By RSVPing to this trip or any other DC UL trip, you agree to DC UL's waiver liability terms (http://www.meetup.com/DC-UL-Backpacking/pages/Liability_Waiver/).
- As per our carpool policy, riders should pay drivers $0.10/mile. This trip is ~130 miles roundtrip so anticipate paying $13.
