CHANGE #2: as Marie, the leader, isn't available for the March meetup, this classic novel of the Soviet era is moving to April. Let's hope we nail it then.

Life and Fate is a 1960 novel by Vasily Grossman, the author's magnum opus and a sharp criticism of Stalinism. It takes place during the Nazi Germany invasion of the Soviet Union, interweaving a transfixing account of the Battle of Stalingrad with the story of a middle-class family, the Shaposhnikovs, scattered by fortune from Germany to Siberia. The characters are a combination of fictional and historical figures, including Stalin and Hitler. Grossman devotes large sections of the book to the prisoners held at Soviet and German labor and concentration camps, which is necessary for a holistic understanding of the time and events. A book judged so dangerous in the Soviet Union that not only the manuscript but the ribbons on which it had been typed were confiscated by the state, Life and Fate is an epic tale of World War II and a profound reckoning with the dark forces that dominated the twentieth century.
