What we'll do
Its been a while since weve done anything related to San Joses most popular tourist attraction, the Winchester Mystery House, and with the release of Winchester, Bay Area Ghost Hunters want to make a day of it. First, well be watching the new movie, starring Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester, at the Cinearts theatre, which is right across the street from the Winchester House in Santana Row.
For those who arent familiar with its legend, Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester was the heiress of her husband, William Wirt Winchester, son of Oliver Fisher, the successful manufacturer and marketer of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After her husbands death, she spent some time traveling and became captivated by the spiritualist movement. She had a reading by a psychic who told her some smack about moving west, continuously building a house and living forever. Regardless of whether she believed the psychic, she did move from Connecticut to California; bought an eight-room farmhouse, which she called Llanada Villa; and was constantly remodeling it until she died in 1922. Her domestic staff said she would enter her sance room around midnight every night and ask for direction on designs for her house.
This movie was produced for entertainment purposes and is only loosely based on the facts of Sarah Winchesters life. Viewers expecting historical or paranormal accuracy would be doing it an injustice. It is definitely ghost story, but not a bloodbath. The surprises and suspense are definitely there.
Arranging movie-watching meetups is always a challenge, since its difficult to make a commitment with a theatre very far in advance. Well be going to the first showing at the Cinearts, which is currently listed at 11:20 a.m. This theatre also offers very comfy and spacious recliner seats in its auditoriums with reserved seating, so BAGH is asking members to purchase their own tickets either online or at the ticket booth. Tickets are $7.50 for the first showing and members will have a specific seat assignment at purchase.
There is plenty of free parking around Santana Row, although it can either be a long walk or sometimes hard to find. Looking forward to meeting members there.
What to bring
Important to know
Because all seats are assigned when tickets are purchased, we're asking members to purchase their own. This can be done either online or at the ticket booth.
