What we'll do
Its nearby, Its 2,800 feet in elevation. It offers mountaintop views of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, Shasta Bally, and Whiskeytown Lake. Its my go to hike in Whiskeytown NRA. Its Kanaka Peak. When I posted this hike at the last minute at the beginning of December, two other hikers took me up on the offer. If you havent hiked up Kanaka before, nows your chance to see what makes this hike so good. If you have enjoyed the views from the top and on the way up before, heres a chance to enjoy it with a new group of people. The total distance round trip is 8.2 miles with approximately 2,900 feet of elevation gain over the course of the up and down trail, requiring only moderate effort.

Well carpool from the Tops on Eureka Way to the Peltier Bridge Campground. From there it is about 1 mile on the Peltier Valley Road (closed during the winter) to the Kanaka Peak Trailhead. After stepping across two small streams, well head up the trail to the south. At the 2.3 mile mark well have a chance to view a seasonal waterfall that may or may not be flowing this time of the year. Its also about here, that we start getting views of Whiskeytown Lake below us to the north with snow-covered Mt. Shasta rising up in the distance. Another 0.2 miles brings us to the Kanaka Cut-Off Trail, which leads steeply downhill to the NEED Camp, and includes a knee high (or deeper) ford of Paige Creek. This also marks the resumption of our climb after some nearly flat or downhill trail. At the 4-mile mark well reach a bench nestled under an oak tree just below the top of Kanaka Peak with views to the north of Whiskeytown Lake and Mt. Shasta framed by the forest. The actual top of Kanaka is a short 0.1 miles to the east where you will have views of nearby Shasta Bally (6,181 feet), Little Bally (5,374 feet), and South Fork Mt (5,180 feet). After a rest break at the top, well retrace our steps back down the mountain to the cars at the campground.

Im allowing 5 hours for the hike and break at the top, a pace of 1.8 mph, but I suspect well finish sooner.

**The trip organizer is a volunteer and NOT a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

**Joining any event is entirely voluntary and participants assume any and all risks and financial responsibilities associated with the activities; for example... bodily harm or injury and or death from wildlife, weather, terrain, falls, waterways, acts of God, etc. It is each persons responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous activity, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, survival gear and navigation equipment for the conditions.

What to bring
There is an outhouse at the trailhead, but no treated water for the entirety of the hike. I recommend 2L of water and some snacks/lunch.

Important to know

How to find us:I'll be driving a dark blue Mazda3 Hatchback parked on the Eureka Way side of the parking lot.
