Time for the annual freeze kayak/camp trip! We will paddle the Wilbarger Paddling Trail on the Colorado River and camp out on Boy Scout Island Saturday night (8 miles). Sunday mid-morning we will paddle another 6 miles to the pull-out at Fisherman's Park in Bastrop. RSVP's limited to 16 paddlers.

Meet at the put-in point Saturday morning at 9:00 AM: Utley Bridge on FM 969 (exit off Hwy 71). Drive underneath the bridge to unload gear. We will arrange our own shuttles to the pull-out point for most of the vehicles. Shuttle vehicles returning us to the put-in can park safely overnight at the RV campground across the street. (Cost is $10 per vehicle). Please bring a few dollars to share this cost.

This is kayak camping so you will need to bring all the gear you need in your kayak to stay warm, dry and comfortable on a midwinter night. Bring non-cotton clothing, ample layers, warm gloves, hat, sleeping bag rated to 20 degrees or lower, air mattress, spare clothes, cooking gear, etc. You also need to bring the customary kayak gear including a PFD, whistle, paddling jacket, etc. If you are not outfitted for freezing cold weather camping and kayaking, then you will want to sit this one out - seriously. Camping: Boy Scout Island is a large island with lots of camping potential. We generally beach along the side of the island. Lots of room for tents and spreading out. Hammockers can hike in a short way to the center of the island which provides higher ground, protection from wind, lots of trees for hammocks. Wear long pants for the short hike in case of poison ivy.

Meals: Pack accordingly for 2 lunches, 1 breakfast, snacks and 1 dinner. Plan on a communal dinner Saturday night, so bring something to share. Any Dutch Oven enthusiasts out there - please let me know.

We will have a nice campfire Saturday night.

Side note: Many of you may fondly remember "Wild Bill" who introduced me to this trip many years back. This trip will be the 4th Annual Wild Bill Memorial Winter Freeze Trip.

I will provide updates closer to departure time for confirmed participants. Look forward to seeing you on the river! Questions - call me on cell at[masked]-5815.
