Let's enjoy a hike at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary! Although there's rain in the forecast, it's not supposed to kick in until the afternoon, so we should have just enough time for a hike.

What we'll do:

We'll start with a short loop around the boardwalk near the Wetlands Center, and then do a loop around Otter Point/Two Run Trails, interrupted by a walk along the Railroad Bed Trail to the boat launch and back. Just before finishing the Two Run Trail, we'll peel off for a third loop along the Farm Trail, River Farm Road, and the Upper Railroad Trail. Arriving back at Two Run Trail, we'll follow it and the utility road back to Wetlands Center.

The total distance is about 4.5 miles and should take about 2 hours, depending on breaks and sightseeing. The surface is gravel roads, boardwalks, and dirt paths, with some mild elevation changes here and there. This is an easy to moderate hike.

Google map:

How to get there: From the I-495 Capital Beltway (either direction), take exit 11A onto MD-4 S/East Pennsylvania Ave towards Upper Marlboro. Follow MD-4 S for about 10.5 miles and turn right onto Plummer Lane. Follow Plummer Lane for 0.5 mile and turn right onto Wrighton Rd. Follow Wrighton Rd for another 0.5 mile and the sanctuary will be on your left. After turning left into the sanctuary, follow the gravel road (Blue Shirt Road) about a mile to the parking area for the Wetlands Center. See

What to bring: Water and comfy shoes. Sorry, your furry friend must stay behind this time -- dogs are not allowed in the sanctuary. A poncho or umbrella might be handy in case the weather forecasters are wrong again, and a change of shoes for after the hike in case your feet get muddy.

Cost: $6 per vehicle, $5 per vehicle for the physically challenged. Free entrance for active military, veterans, and their families (ID required).

Weather: The forecast is cloudy and a high of 51F, with light, variable winds and an 80% chance of light rain later in the day. Updates here:

Advisory: As a reminder, this is an adult group, and you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and well-being during events. No one under 18 years of age is allowed at this event, either as members or as guests, to include babies in carriers and/or strollers.

Administrative stuff: There are public restrooms at the Wetlands Center, which opens at 9 am.
