What we'll do
Vaill Point Park is a beautiful 23-acre recreational park located along Moultrie Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway just south of St. Augustine. We'll walk the 1.5-mile paved trail through the woods, where we should see the usual woodland birds like the Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, and we'll also look for Northern Parulas, Yellow-throated Warblers, American Redstarts, and possibly Blue-headed Vireos. We'll also visit the boardwalk overlooking the salt marsh at the intersection of the Intracoastal Waterway and Moultrie Creek, where we may see nesting Great Blue Herons as well as Belted Kingfisher, Great Egret, Osprey, Double-crested Cormorant, Wood Stork, and maybe a Bald Eagle or two. Vaill Point is an eBird Hot Spot, so we should see lots of great birds!

After Vaill Point we will visit nearby Canopy Shores Park (804 Christina Dr, St. Augustine, FL), which features an easy stroll through majestic oak woods and access to the Intracoastal Waterway for more viewing opportunities. Canopy Shores provides ample parking, restroom facilities, and a covered pavilion with picnic tables, so pack a lunch if you would like to join the group for a picnic lunch after birding.

Meeting place: Vaill Point parking lot, 630 Vaill Point Rd, St. Augustine. Parking spaces at Vaill Point are very limited, so carpooling is recommended. No fee.

What to bring
Binoculars, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat if desired.
Lunch if interested in staying to eat.

Important to know
From I-95 South, take exit 311 to FL 207 N, then turn right onto Wildwood Drive, left onto US 1 N, then right onto Vaill Point Rd. Alternative route is to take US 1 S (Philips Highway) through St. Augustine, then turn left onto Vaill Point Rd just after you cross Moultrie Creek. After about a mile the park entrance will be on the left.
