NAME: BROWNSTONE CANYON EXPLORER up the canyon behind Ash mountain and north.

EVERYONE starts on the waitlist... it's not very challenging except for the distance for most of the time, though we will explore a little bit when we get onto the big rocks next to the pictographs. NO MORE than 15 with me. Please answer the question at the end.

Total distance: 8 miles +- round trip, it's a very long hike and a lot of scrambling on the boulder-filled streambed uphill.

Pace: 2.5 to 3 of 5

Total time to complete: 5-6 hours we may be out longer, it depends on how things go, how well the group moves, what we find to explore and so forth. EXPLORER is the key word on this event.

Elevation Change: 1400 feet +-
Difficulty: 3.5 of 5
Scrambling: about half of it. This is one event where hiking poles have use for a few miles as we hike up the streambed.

How easy to follow? Most of it isn't a huge challenge, it's a stream bed for a long way, that changes when, we climb up the rocks at the north end of this hike.

Bathrooms: None (except rocks) Not even at the trailhead, stop at Red Springs picnic area to use the pit toilet if necessary.

Donations: In no sense required, but always appreciated. Donations help to pay for things like Wilderness First Aid Training for Organizers and Asst. Organizers, loaner gear, Meetup Fees, occasional snacks, drinks, electrolyte powder, first aid supplies and so forth.

NAME: BROWNSTONE EXPLORER up the canyon behind Ash mountain and north

This is an all-day adventure. It's a long way, and it's very scenic so there will be some breaks to take photos and have a rest and a snack along the way. It's a narrow canyon along a very long part of the distance so if rain is forecast we cannot do this hike.

We start out by hiking up and over Hell Hill, then up the gravel streambed to the west until the convergence of the boulder-filled canyon stream bed to the north. We hike up that north canyon until it rises at the end to the red, pink and golden rocks, play around on those and out into the wash behind those rocky outcrops.

It's a beautiful area. This hike is for those with a considerable amount of stamina and some scrambling experience. There's not much challenging on this route except the distance and the amount of clambering over the boulders.

I have to rest sometimes because my knees hurt, so be patient if you go. Those who sign up to go are expected to stay with the group not range far ahead or lag behind or take side trips into other branching canyons.

Carry 2-3 liters of water a light lunch, a few snacks, bring a headlamp if you have one. We don't intend to be out until dark, but in case of emergency, it's good to be prepared. Dress in layers this time of year is quite variable for temperature.
