Most of the information below is from 14ers.com, including the route instruction, trailhead location, and mountain details. I recommend to everyone participating in this hike to visit this site for important information regarding 14ers, specifically this mountain and route. Thanks! Difficulty Class 2

Class 2 definition: More difficult hiking that may be off-trail. You may also have to put your hands down occasionally to keep your balance. May include easy snow climbs or hiking on talus/screen.

Plan
Let's plan on meeting at the 2wd trailhead (Winfield) around 5:45, and then start at 6 am. If possible, we can drive further up the 4wd road. For those of you who want carpool, meet at Wooly Mammoth at 3:15 am, and leave no later than 3:30 am.

Gear:
Bring enough layers to keep warm. Bring gloves, eye protection, poles, snow shoes, microspikes/crampons, gaiters, enough food, and plenty of water. Additionally, as with any 14er, it is highly recommended that you bring the ten essentials. The complete list can be found at http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html

Difficulty: Class 2

Route: Northwest Slopes ( https://www.14ers.com/route.php?route=huro1&peak=Huron+Peak )
Summit Elevation: 14,003 feet
Trailhead Elevation: 10,560 feet
Elevation Gain: 3,500-3,800 feet
Length: ~10.75 miles, maybe less depending on conditions of the 4wd road.

To the Trailhead:
From Leadville: Drive 20 miles south on U.S. 24 and turn right on the Chaffee County 390 road.
Buena Vista: Drive 14.5 miles north on U.S. 24 and turn left on the Chaffee County 390 road. On the 390 road (dirt), drive 11.8 miles to Winfield. Turn left and measure from here. Drive 0.1 mile to reach the lower, 2WD trailhead on the left. After 0.4 mile, the road gets rugged and narrow (4WD required). After 0.7 mile, stay right at a junction. After 1.7 miles, the Banker Mine road is to the left - stay straight on the main road and continue to the end, at 2.1 miles. The trail starts past the parking area.

Google Maps:
Use this link by clicking on it, which opens the path in meetup. Then, open it in a google chrome web browser from the right-hand corner, and run it from the web browser or open the app from google chrome.

Disclaimer:
By attending this hike, you assume all responsibility for your safety and agree that the event host, organizer, the 14er Fan Club, and Meetup are in no way liable in the event of your injury or death. Mountaineering in Colorado can be very dangerous, and many people have died on the 14ers. Weather, terrain, and other people can put you in a situation where your knowledge and experience will be vital. If you are new to these peaks, I urge you to pick up a book on mountaineering safety and make sure your basic navigation skills (map+compass, not only GPS) are up-to-par and you can rely on them in a tough situation. Just because a crowd of people can march to the summit of Quandary Peak on a summer Saturday, it doesnt mean that they are all safe. Altitude sickness, dehydration, and fast-building storms are the most common problems. Please be in shape and self-sufficient. Although this is a group activity, you are responsible for yourself. Everyone is to be self-sufficient - i.e. responsible for own camping gear, clothing, food, water, other drinks, etc.
