This hike is only open to those who have done any of my Tier 5 hikes with me.
This hike is a Black Tier/Tier 5 hike on my Scrambling Tiers list.
Helmets are always welcome. Be sure to use one that doesn't block your sight.
Always carry "in case of emergency" numbers with you.
I've redesigned this route to include more obstacles. It requires more time now. I estimate the time to be about 5.5 hours.
Right in the heart of the Calicos is this loop hike that will test your skill and resolve. Combining some elements of Guardian Angel and Britt Loop along with new features like the "smokestack" and the "crooked stripe," this hike takes a wide loop around to Calico Tanks and back. Don't be fooled by the distance and elevation gain. This is advanced scrambling.
Along the way we'll encounter lots of different colors of rocks and many different formations. We've been lucky enough to see some wildlife in these areas, like snakes and tortoises and one very friendly butterfly. We'll also take in some views of the Park and the City.
The terrain can be difficult and we'll encounter some formidable obstacles. The "smokestack" is a long, tall crack in the canyon that has a few distinct sections. It requires complex scrambling techniques and ability to handle exposure. The "crooked stripe" is a long, narrow slot that drops down and requires advance scrambling ability. There are also a number of other obstacles and some steep, flat rock.
Not for beginners or those afraid of heights. There are many places that require advanced scrambling skills and there is some exposure. You must be able to pull your body weight up and lower yourself down using your arms.
No guests will be allowed.
To prevent crashing, the meeting location will be emailed only to people who are going. And just in case that isn't clear:
