In 1970, La Mauricie National Park became the 23rd park in the Canadian National Parks network. It covers 536 sq. km and protects a representative sample of the Canadian Shield, the central part of the Precambrian region of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence.

La Mauricie National Park occupies the southern margin of the Canadian Shield and links this land mass with the lowlands of the St. Lawrence Valley. The park lies on a plateau sloping slightly from West to East, broken up by hills and valleys that create areas of rugged landscape. Generally speaking, the level of the land increases from East to West, rising from 150 m to slightly over 500 m.

We will be hiking the parks most beautiful and demanding trails. Well have to ford a brook and we will also get to see the Ruisseau du Fou falls. And, once we reach one of the lookouts, we will enjoy some breathtaking views. Our hike is shown by the orange loop in the map below. However we will start the hike from the parking lot, 1.6 km to the southeast.

Ascent: Total elevation gain is around 650 m, making this a moderate hike. If you have not recently hiked more than 15 km, this hike is not for you.

Below is the route from Montreal to the trailhead where we will park the cars and start the hike. Drivers, please print the directions after clicking on the link. There may be no cell service at the trailhead, so a printed copy of the directions is necessary. The drive will take less than 2 hours.

Click here for the driving directions to the trailhead.

And of course, we will have a tasty dinner together in Restaurant Palace after the hike, which is partway back to Montreal.
