Sky Meadows State Park
Rich in history, this 1,864-acre park has scenic views, woodlands and the rolling pastures of historic Mt. Bleak-Skye Farm. The farm represents colonial through post-Civil War life in Crooked Run Valley and features an 1843 federal style mansion. About an hour from DC and an hour and a half from Baltimore, the park has 10.5 miles of bridle trails, 24 miles of hiking trails, 9 miles of bike trials and Appalachian Trail access.
This is a moderate hike with beautiful views of the Piedmont. The trail is a 4.7 mile loop with a 1,085 feet elevation gain. It does have rocky section on the way up, but it doesn't last too long. The hike should take 3 hours max. including rest stops and time spent admiring the scenery.
Lunch and Winery
After our hike we will go down the road to Barrel Oak Winery (BOW), where they will be serving wood fired pizza...yay! And for our listening pleasure, "hill country blues" music by Dave Alan Lange.
Barrel Oak Winery boasts a growing record of awards and accolades for their hand-crafted vintages. Notable winners include the winerys Petit Verdot, Norton, Viognier and Cabernet Franc. In the fall of 2010, winemakers Sharon Roeder and Rick Tagg were honored by the news that their 2008 Petit Verdot had taken top prize at the State Fair of Virginia. Whats more, the wine made a splash on the West Coast, taking gold at the San Fransisco International Wine Competition, and a silver medal at the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition.
BOW is a very "dog-centric" winery. Come meet the winery mascots, Justice, Peanut and Birch and bring your own cuddly canine out to enjoy the day!
